Oshá root is the wild parsnip Ligusticum porteri that comes from North America & Mexico. It is a favourite food of bears who harvest the roots when they come out of hibernation, giving it the name Bear Root. Bears are the herbalists of the animal world and forage many medicines, Oshá being a favourite. This medicine moves stagnation with special affinity for the excretory system (skin, kidneys, intestines and lungs), a useful aid after a long winter. This medicine is very special.
Oshá is a decongestant, lung medicine, and immune booster. However since it is endangered it can be replaced with pine needles for its lung uses. It also aids the body in boosting the appetite & building mass – useful for after times of depletion such as in anorexia, or a lot of nervous energy.
There are very special spiritual uses for this plant, such as opening the voice up when communication has been stuck. It has a grounding and protective energy, useful for purification before a ceremony.
