The Poppy plant, P. somniferum, shares a long and varied history with humanity, reaching back into our far distant past, with the poppy being used as both food and medicine.

The latex sourced from the seed pod is the source of the poppies medicinal qualities, is the source of opium, which can then be made into derivatives such as morphine, codeine and heroin. These medicines are powerful analgesics and sedatives, and have been used throughout history as a way to relieve pain, promote sleep and relaxation, and cease diarrhoea.
Due to the powerful effect of this plant, there is also evidence that throughout history poppy was also used recreationally, and also sometimes abused, as it’s qualities and effects can be very addictive.
In Ancient Egypt, depictions of poppies are often found alongside depictions of blue lily and mandrake, suggesting they were used together, mixed into wine, which is supported by remains found in urns.
In Sumer (Sumeria), poppy was called “Hul Gil”, the herb of joy. In Ancient Greece, poppies were sacred to Hypnos, the god of sleep, and some scholars believe it may have been an ingredient of the sacrament consumed as part of the rites of the Elysian mysteries. Poppy was considered sacred to Demeter, the goddess of the earth, as well as Thanatos or Hades, the god of the underworld, and one myth states that poppies sprang from Aphrodite’s tears as she mourned her lover Adonis.
